Photography gear should be kept at an absolute minimum. This post is also going to be brief and to the point. Each of the three items below have become part of my daily camera kit. I personally use each item and haven’t found a better substitute.
Street photography gear that I use every day
If I don’t use something I get rid of it. I am anti-materialism. Unless it’s useful it’s slowing you down. If these items below don’t look useful to you, click away from this article right now.
Ape Case Cubeze
When I’m walking the streets I can put it in the smallest backpack and it keeps an extra lens, filters, and batteries. It’s small and simple and protects my gear. If you’re a minimalist this is exactly what you need.
A lot of people like fancy new stuff. I’m fine with something simple that just works. The Ape Case is simple. It’s a padded bag, yellow, and has a drawstring. It’s durable and not expensive.
Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4 filter
Diffusion Filter
Tiffen Black Pro Mist
This filter reduces micro contrast in your image. You will notice its effect most when you look at the highlights of a photograph. Think of a streetlamp on a foggy night. The light spreads out from the lamp and creates an aesthetically pleasing glow around the bulb. This diffusion filter gives you a similar effect without needing a naturally foggy atmosphere.
I don’t use the Black Pro Mist for all of my photos. But, when I’m on the street I’m shooting for myself. Having a the highlights bloom just a little bit adds to the look I’m trying to get. The Black Pro Mist filter softens the image and gives it a look that I like.
I bought this on Amazon while it was on sale for just $50. Tiffen makes them in any filter size you want. I have the 49mm since that is what goes on the lens of my Fujifilm X100v.
Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap
Our Pick
Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap (Ash)
The Peak Design wrist strap is a fantastic accessory. I had heard a lot about Peak Design for years but never bought anything from them. I’m a gear minimalist and usually have only the bare minimum. But a year and a half ago I finally hit the purchase button and ordered this strap.
I love it’s simplicity and durability. It’s been between my x100v and Sonly A7iv for a year and a half and doesn’t show any significant wear. Attaching it to my cameras is a breeze and I never wonder if it’s going to be secure or safe.
I appreciate adjustable length and it allows for a comfortable and secure fit on my wrist, regardless of its size. It’s even small enough to grip tight on my 5 year old’s wrist when she uses the x100v. I have the ash color which is a light brown leather. It looks great and it’s super handy.
Is Street Photography Without People Still Street Photography?
Street photography is a documentation of the city and it’s people without unnecessary decoration. It’s a documentation of a moment that can hold historical value.
I don’t include human subjects in my street photography. What I shoot is probably most accurately considered a sub-niche of street photography.
This style of street photography fits who I am. Very minimal, easy, and low barrier of entry. Street photography gear should always compliment your style of shooting. Don’t over think it.
